Firstly,
for those who have never heard of me, I should introduce myself. My
name is David Wood - farmer, teacher, part time writer and on this
website, writer for 'Woody's World.' At present, I am residing in
Doha, Qatar, working as an English Language Instructor for 'Qatar
Petroleum.' Prior to this I was working in the same capacity for B.P
in Colombia and Georgia. Fortunately I have survived robberies, kidnappings
and death in these places so I am here to give information and to
tell stories about Rainham Cricket Club.
I
have been connected with Rainham Cricket Club since 1968 when I
joined as a teenager from Upchurch C.C. I became a regular First
XI wicket-keeper/batsman in 1970 until 1974 and even played for
the Medway AKCC Under 19 XI. I went to London to complete my London
University degree in Art-History and to qualify as a teacher at
Borough Road College in Isleworth. Because of my location I joined
Richmond Cricket Club where I established myself as a wicket-keeper,
played in the Middlesex County League, mainly for the Second XI
and experienced a good level of cricket for twelve seasons. In
1986 I moved back to Kent due to the death of my father and my continuation
of the family fruit farm which I still own and run with my brother.
Many Rainham cricketers have passed through my orchards as fruit
pickers over the years. Between
1986 and 2000 I played mainly for the First XI as a wicket-keeper
but due to working abroad my availability was often curtailed and
limited to a small part of the season. However, I would consider
my greatest moment at the club as being a regular part of the team
that became Mid Kent League Champions in 2000, allowing the team
to get entry into the Forester Kent League after years of being
held back by lack of ambition. I also felt good about setting up
the Colts section in 1972 which has brought a lot of good young
players into the club right up to the present day and about serving
as Fixture Secretary for 15 years between 1986 and 2001. I would
like to think that all this helped to establish Rainham as a better
and more successful club on the circuit and in the area. My
immediate ambition is to complete my book about the history of Rainham
Cricket Club and have it published to celebrate the 150th
anniversary in 2006. At present it is written up to date but must
be continually updated until 2006. Because
of a combination of age, injury, working abroad in the petroleum
industry and the pressure of my farm during the summer months I
can no longer play but I can still contribute as an umpire and in
the organization of the club. In conclusion I would like to say that I hope that I will be able to bring to light many stories and events that have happened in the club over the years and to continue to contribute to the advancement of Rainham Cricket Club.
